(Apologies for the Thread Name. It was supposed to be Modern World: the Underground, but somehow got messed up and I don't know how to change it.)
Moderator Note: fixed for you
Setting: The Modern World (except all the myths are true)
Idea: All the Myths are True. Every one of them.
Except, the world doesn't know it yet, because a long, long time ago there was a human warrior who conquered all the mythical races and forced them all "underground" or "off the grid" as it is currently referred to. The warrior was called the "Blood Rose", and her heart as a cold stone. No one knows what she had against magic, nor why she did what she did, but her and her descendants kept the mythical beings out of the view of humans, and eventually they became legend.
Today, the term "gridless" refers to these creatures or beings, as well as anyone who is outcasted by the mortal world. There are humans with magic, fairies, elves, shapeshifters, you name it. However, it isn't just limited to magical beings. There are mutants, trained vampire hunters, and unnamed beings created by science. There are humans who simply use magical items, but have no magic of there own. There are people who have been enchanted, cursed, abandoned, or forgotten. All these people are considered "gridless'
There are three big groups of "gridless": The Underground, the Reserve, and the Borealis.
The Underground is all about order. The moment you join, you are taken to their HQ (The Mesa) to fill out medical paperwork, do a medical evaluation, be assigned a mentor, a room, and an I.D. card. The Underground is run on a points system. Food and board is free, but for everything else, you must pay with your points. You gain points by doing chores, teaching classes (if you are certified), taking classes (if you are a newbie), or taking on excursion jobs (going outside the Mesa to keep order "on the grid"). Before you can take any excursion jobs, you must pass a test given by your mentor to prove you are ready. After that, you may be assigned an apprentice yourself. Also, they have facilities for research, as well as the biggest medical center off the grid.
There are six different factions in the Underground, and each faction has an elected representative on the High Council, which makes all decisions
• Faction 0: Ancient Forgotten Magics
o Leader: Genevieve DeVivre (“The Last Dragon Tamer”)
o Faction 0 is home to users of the most ancient and mysterious types of magic. It is sort of like the “miscellaneous” group of magic users. There are the tamers of various mythical beasts, as well as riders and slayers, each of which has a unique magic. Zodiac mages, blood mages, necromancers, shamans, and more. Basically, if your magic type doubles as an occupation, you are probably classified here.
• Faction 1: Non-Magic Humans and Hunters
o Leader: J.D. (“The Silver-Pistol Hunter”)
o Faction 1 is known as the Chooser Faction, because they are the only group that actually chooses to be off the grid. They don’t have magic. They don’t have any special ability that makes them different from the other humans. That isn’t to say they aren’t gifted. There are sharp shooters, martial artists, doctors, teachers, architects, and many others. They simply choose to exist in the Underground, although no one knows why. This is the smallest Faction.
• Faction 2: Specialists
o Leader: Raphael Dargent (“The Miracleworker”)
o Faction 2 is a very… unique faction. Only Raphael knows what “qualifies” a person to be in Faction 2. Most people in Faction 2 live outside of the Mesa, and the few that chose to stay are often there because they’ve been found guilty systems for high crimes. However, they are never punished beyond being Mesa-bound and only the council knows why.
• Faction 3: Racial Traits / Natural Scientific Powers
o Leader: Roxanne Farone (“The Skinwalker”)
o Faction 3 is home to anyone who can sing “I was born this way” as an explanation for their abilities (and they don’t rely on magic). This faction includes shapeshifters, kitsunes, mermaids, vampires and werewolves (they can be in Faction 3 or 4, it is their choice), half-dragons and more.
• Faction 4: Mutants / Unnatural Scientific Powers
o Leader: Anna Mallory (“the Immortal Girl”)
o Faction 4 is similar to faction three, however, these people got their abilities later in life, and had no idea it was coming. Somewhere in accidents in labs, or experimented on. Others caused their own mutations either on purpose or accident. Mutants are also put in this category, since more of their powers don’t develop until they are much older. Also, zombies would be classified under this category. Just throwing that in there in case of a zombie apocalypse.
• Faction 5: Modern Magic
o Leader: Renee Morah (“Magic’s Bastard Queen”)
o Faction 5 deals with the modern eight types of magic: Light, Dark, Time, Space, Law, Chaos, Nature, and Dream (or Spirit magic, depending on who you ask). They are the most organized of the six factions, and (unlike Faction 1) probably the most knowledgeable when it comes to their own abilities. They understand how magic works and how to make the best of it.
