Azeneth stood on the roof of the Diamond, watching the teleporter pad near the gates of the Mesa. It was fifteen minutes to noon. According to Rune, the new recruits would be here around midday. Knowing him, they would be here closer to one o'clock instead. Azeneth sighed. Another Monday, another lengthy explanation to people who either have lived gridless all their lives, or are going to be so confused and upset about the whole thing that nothing Azeneth said was going to make it better. Another Monday, another day working as a tour guide for the Mesa. Just another Monday...
"Trial is over" a deep, male voice behind her replied. Azeneth spun around, not used to being taken by surprise. She let out a sigh of relief when she recognized the dark skinned, slim figure. He crossed his arms in front of his white muscle shirt, and shoulder-length dreadlocks were tied back with a red ribbon (probably done by one of the young girls in the Mesa, Azeneth figured). The man leaned casually against the railing beside Azeneth, eyeing her with a focus that never seemed to fit with his relaxed personality. Those eyes weren't those of someone visiting a friend. These were the eyes of someone wanting information.
"So, Vrish, how did the little squirt hold out?" Azeneth replied, looking away.
"Exceedingly well, actually. She actually ended the trial rather early by invoking her 11th Right."
"Did she now?" Azeneth said, looking out towards the gate.
"Yes, it was actually quite amazing. I mean, considering she had no previous run-ins with the law, nor any reason to have memorized the 13 Right of Trial. For her to have known she could use the drawback of her curse to clear her name..."
"She wouldn't have been the first. That is why we have the 11th Right in the first place, so that way be can clear the innocent quickly."
"Yes, but you and I both know Takara wasn't innocent. She killed a lot of people..."
"Are you saying you are upset by the result?"
"No, of course not. I am happy my student is cured of her curse and cleared of charges. However, there is only one other person who managed to use the 11th Right to clear their name, despite being guilty."
"She was there during Zane's trial, so that is probably where she picked it up."
Azeneth could see Vrish crack a smile from the corner of her eye. "That is the thing: She was a witness on the second day of the trial. She wasn't there for the conclusion. I remember, because she refused to come out of her room that day. They had to call me in."
"I-I see.."
"Look, I know you just wanted to help her, but you must be careful about these things. You've probably made many enemies helping her out..."
Azeneth turned around and walked towards the stairs. "Sorry, Vrish. I have to go meet newbies by the gates. It was nice talking to you, and we can talk later."
With that, Azeneth walked up to the teleporter pad, and waited for the new recruits.

Cinder stepped through the portal, a little dizzy from the effects of teleporting. As his vision cleared, he looked up at the Mesa. He had expected something more grandiose than this fairly simple complex. No matter. He had a brave new world to explore, and it was his time to shine. Noticing the girl waiting outside the portal, he stepped out and waited for her to speak, sizing her up in the meantime.

"Take a picture. It will last longer," Azeneth replied, not looking up from the clipboard she had been writing on. She flipped over her page of doodles, and on the back was the official documents she was supposed to be filling out. She murmured something about Rune "sending them in one by one again", and sighed.
"Alright, rookie. Tell me, what is your name and why are you here? And if you respond with 'to join the Underground', I will smack you," Azeneth responded, still a little upset about Vrish getting in her business.

So she was going to be snappy, eh? Well, two could play this game. "Listen, sweetheart, I know I'm handsome, but that doesn't mean you have to get all uppity about it."

Azeneth took down his name, still not making eye contact. "Not interested. Firstly, I need your full, actual name. If you want to go by Cinder, that is fine, but our official records need to have your legal name. Secondly, I suppose I wasn't clear. I meant 'Why do you need to be off the grid?'. Like, are you a vampire or wizard or something?" She looked up briefly. "Or are you just a regular human with a death wish?"

Cinder sighed. "Fine, we'll do it your way. My name is Nathan Hurst, and I'm here because I have fire powers that were a bit... out of control when they first developed."

Azeneth quickly wrote it down. "I am Azeneth, and I will be you lovely, enthusiastic tour guide this evening," Azeneth said, her tone not even changing slightly. "Alright, do you know the origins of these powers? This will decide your faction and where you will be roomed."
"You know what? On second thought, I am just going to have you fill out this form yourself, since you don't seem keen on chatting with me," Azeneth said, handing Cinder the clipboard, half filled out sheet, and pen. The form went like so:

The sound of footsteps on the pavement came into hearing, and a few moments later, a blonde man dressed in khakis and a plain white button-up approached, raising a hand. "Good morning..." He glanced down at his watch, smiled, and quickly amended his remark. "Good afternoon, Red. And good afternoon to you as well, newcomer. Enjoying your paperwork?"

" 'Sup, angel?" Azeneth asked as she peered over at the paperwork. She then cursed under her breath, and began murmuring to herself. "No origins, huh? Damn, that means we are going to have to run a lot of tests. Until then... lets see, I guess I am going to assume Faction 4, and give you a room there. You will be in the north wing, basement area..." she said, her voice trailing off.

"Thank you, but the problem isn't the paperwork. It is that we don't have the information to fill it out. We have to do a medical and psych evaluation on everyone who arrives, but this one doesn't know anything about his powers so we have to do some lab tests on top of that," Azeneth grumbled. "This added to the fact that Rune is sending in the rookies one-by-one again is making it a rather frustrating Monday, but I digress. What have you been up to, Iruel?"

Iruel shrugged. "Reading. Walking. Pondering my place in the universe. The usual." He itched idly at the back of his neck. "I'm sure Rune has reasons for the one-at-a-time approach, though. Probably figures that sending in too many at once would be a security risk. Or overwhelming for you, since they appear to have posted you here by yourself again."

"Yeah. I've been alone out here every Monday for the last month. Normally I have two others with me, but two of them are out of commission. Apparently, Will has been overloaded trying to handle some... interesting medical situations back on the grid. There is some new necromancer who has been causing plague in the New York area. Lula from Faction 1 has been sent out to try and catch the guy, but it means Will is stuck trying to stealthily heal the victims. As for my other companion, Destiny is with Lula trying to track the guy down." Azeneth replied with a sigh. "I tried talking to Raph about it, but he is picking up the tab in the Medical Center, trying to cover for Will's absence. It is getting intense around here..."
Azeneth turned to Cinder. "If you are done with that paper work, my teammate Sparrow should be here soon to take you to the Medical Center for some tests. There they will figure out the source of your power, as well as make sure that the teleporter pad didn't rearrange your insides... I swear, that only has happened once."

"I'll take the fact that I'm still walking and breathing as a good sign, then," Cinder replied, stepping off to the side to wait for Sparrow. "And all I can tell you about my powers is that either they only just developed, or they've been dormant for a long time. Which is possible, considering that I've never been exposed to fire before I was trapped in that house..." He trailed off as the next recruit stepped through the portal.
